What Do Wasps Look Like?

Unlike bees that typically have a rounded body covered with some hair, wasps have a long, lean, and smooth body texture. Most wasps have a narrow waist and appear in sharp colors. Some of the physical characteristics of common types of wasps include:

  • Yellow jackets: Often misidentified as honey bees, the body of a yellow jacket is roughly ½ inch in length, has a shiny texture and is yellow and black.
  • Bald-faced hornets: The bald-faced hornet has a body that measures from ½ to ¾ of an inch in length that is black with white or cream-colored markings.
  • European hornets: Also known as the giant hornet, European hornets have pale faces and yellow and brown bodies. They are large wasps that range from 1 to 1 ½ inch in length.
  • Paper wasps: The slender body of a paper wasp appears dark brown or black with yellow markings. Paper wasps have long, dangling legs, and they build distinctive “papery” nests.

As with most types of stinging insects, wasps will begin to appear in spring and will no longer remain active as the winter approaches.
