How Dangerous Are Millipedes In Reno?

July 5, 2021

Millipedes ordinarily reside in damp outdoor areas, including gardens and similar habitats, and tend to be active after periods of rainfall. They primarily consume small insects, decaying wood, leaves, and other vegetation. Millipedes begin the reproductive process by laying eggs in areas of soil. These creatures may live for several years in their natural environment, but are unlikely to survive more than a few weeks if indoors.

The Potential Harm Caused By Millipedes

Millipedes do not bite or sting, and typically curl into a coil as a defensive measure when disturbed. They will emit an odorous toxin that is a form of hydrochloric acid that could irritate the skin. Therefore, avoid handling them directly, and promptly wash your hands if inadvertently exposed.

Some individuals have a sensitivity to this substance, and may experience a type of allergic reaction. If you find millipedes indoors, use a vacuum or broom to remove them instead of squishing them, which can generate a foul odor and unwanted residue on surfaces or materials

Best Tips For Prevention

  • To prevent millipedes from making it indoors, walk around the exterior of the structure to identify points of access, including cracks in the foundation, or gaps around doors or windows. Use a caulk, weather stripping, or another durable sealant to fill any voids, and place screens or mesh over exterior vents and other likely entry points close to the ground.

  • Remove clutter and debris from the area adjacent to the property, including mulch, leaf piles, and other unnecessary material that provides them shelter and may result in water retention.

  • Millipedes are likely to be found in crawl spaces, basements, or garages, particularly when the conditions are moist and humid. Therefore, ensure these areas are sufficiently ventilated, and use a dehumidifier if necessary.

  • Limit excessive moisture by repairing leaky faucets, hoses, or spigots, and clean gutters and downspouts to prevent water from accumulating.

Properly Responding To Pest Intrusions

Far too many homeowners make the mistake of taking shortcuts when they notice pest-related concerns. Some people will begin shopping online or in local retailers for do-it-yourself treatment options that tend to be marketed using very exaggerated claims of effectiveness. Examples include granular concentrates, aerosol sprays, baiting systems, and a host of other gimmicky products that merely provide short-term results and result in further aggravation.

When you detect the presence of bothersome pests that pose a potential health risk, or may be capable of damaging property, it is important to reach out to a local extermination professional that is well-equipped to safely and completely eliminate the problem. Further delays in pursuing treatment for pest invasions often allow time for the problem to significantly worsen.
