What Are Boxelder Bugs?
Boxelder bugs are flat, oval-shaped insects that fall somewhere between a cockroach and ladybug in terms of appearance. Most specimens are around 1/2 inch long and have a black coloration with bands of red trim. These pests take their name from their primary habitat — boxelder trees.
During the warmer months of the year, boxelder bugs reside in boxelder trees, where they eat the buds, leaves, and seeds. Although boxelder bugs are primarily attracted to boxelder trees, they are also known to feed on fruit trees when available.
