The Trick To Effective Wasp Control In Reno, NV

August 6, 2021

Which Wasps Live In Reno?

Before you can learn about wasp control, you need to know which wasps are in the area. In about any Reno backyard, you could find one of the following wasp species:

  • Bald-Faced Hornets: One of the most aggressive wasps in the area, bald-faced hornets will do anything to defend their nests. And as social insects, you can expect to have multiple hornets on your property. They're sometimes confused for yellow jackets, but bald-faced hornets are larger and have a pale yellow or white face.
  • European Hornets: These flying insects are one inch long and larger than a yellow jacket. Typically, their nests are located on trees and buildings. Although European hornets aren't particularly aggressive, they do sting when they sense a threat. And, like most wasps, European hornets can sting multiple times.
  • Mud Daubers: With black and yellow or metallic blue and black colors, mud daubers are easy to spot. They have a very slender waist and build nests in or underneath sheltered areas. With mud-like nests, mud daubers are easiest to identify by their nesting habits.
  • Paper Wasps: Paper wasps also have unique nests. When they find a suitable place, paper wasps build upside-down umbrella-shaped nests. These wasps aren't very aggressive.

The Trouble With Wasps

Wasps play an essential role in the ecosystem, but they don't do much to make your yard a safe place. While wasps are pollinators and help the local plants thrive, they're also dangerous. Sure, wasps aren't malicious and out for blood. They are, however, protective and ready to sting.

If you have an allergy to wasp venom, you could have a severe or even deadly reaction. And because wasps sting so many times, there’s a chance you could be stung enough times to develop an allergy. It’s imperative you don’t allow too many wasps hanging around your Reno property.

What Works For Wasp Control

There are things you can do to ensure that wasps don’t take over your yard. For instance, you can change up your landscaping. Certain plants, like lemongrass and basil, deter wasps. You can try placing them in strategic locations to deter wasps.

Other plants attract wasps, so be cautious about what you plant. If you have many flowering plants, Reno wasps will make their way into your yard. Similarly, bushy shrubs provide harboring places for wasps. You can trim them back to minimize the risk of running into a wasp.

Other tips for wasp control include:

  • Proper trash storage
  • Food storage
  • Trim vegetation back
  • Keep sweet drinks and foods indoors

Unfortunately, these methods alone won’t keep your property safe. Wasps will find a reason to encroach onto your yard, and they probably will build a few nests. On your own, you can’t keep wasps away or safely remove nests. You may end up getting stung or leaving your home vulnerable and welcoming to wasps of all kinds.
