Small House Pests to Know

Kevin Phelps • December 26, 2022

If you're like most people, the last thing you want to think about is pests. But the fact is, whether you live in a small house or a large one, you're likely to encounter some type of pest at some point. Here are the lesser-known types of pests that can invade your home, and we'll provide tips on how to get rid of them.

Earwigs

Earwigs are small insects that range in size from 5-25mm and can be found all over the world. They are most often identified by their long, pincer-like tails and deep golden or brown coloration. Earwigs have a unique diet consisting of small bugs, leaves, decaying plant matter, and fungi which makes them especially attracted to gardens and other moist environments. Although they don’t usually cause much damage, having an influx of earwigs in your home can be a nuisance. To get rid of earwigs in your home, it's best to keep your outdoor environment clean by getting rid of rotting logs and debris, as this will make your home less attractive to them. Additionally, using organic insecticides such as diatomaceous earth near cracks and crevices in your home will help deter them from entering. Ultimately, with a little diligence, you can control infestations before they become a major problem!

Voles

Voles are small rodents that can wreak havoc when they get into residential and commercial landscapes. They have brownish-gray fur, tiny eyes, and small ears making them look almost indistinguishable from mice. If left unchecked, voles can cause extensive damage by devouring grass and flowers while also burrowing tunnels underground. They breed quickly and can become overwhelming in areas where their presence is not managed. The best way to get rid of voles is to dispose of organic materials that attract them, set up wire mesh fences around gardens, seal off all entry points, apply granular or liquid repellents as needed and use traps to catch the ones that remain. Professional help may be necessary for large infestations. Taking these precautions will help ensure your yard is free of unwanted voles!

Boxelder Bugs

Boxelder bugs are a nuisance pest. They can be recognized by their black and red patterned bodies and pointed wings tucked in like a v-shape on their backs. Boxelder bugs congregate around boxelder trees and congregate in large numbers when the sun warms the tree's bark, usually in the early spring. To get rid of boxelder bugs, it's important to eliminate breeding spots like leaves or branches that have fallen on the ground around your home. Also, seal off any cracks leading inside or outside your home, as well as keep window shutters closed tightly. Seal up any loose boards or siding to avoid the entry of these pesky little bugs. If you have an infestation problem, call a pest control specialist who has experience with these insects so they can come out and assess the situation.

The first step of proper pest control is gathering knowledge. You need to know the enemy you’re fighting against. Be sure you are on the lookout for these three lesser-known pests in your home.
