How To Keep Fleas Away From Your Reno Home

December 12, 2021

Some Ways Fleas Invade Homes

Although fleas can jump, they are not very mobile pests. Most often, fleas get around by riding on the backs of animals or by clinging onto a person’s clothing. Unprotected pets can carry fleas into homes, however, they are not the only animals that do so. Rodents, birds, and bats also transport fleas and bring these pests indoors with them when they invade. What makes things worse is that once fleas get indoors, they are able to hop off and hide inside carpets, wall voids, and in other secluded areas.

Are Fleas Dangerous?

Fleas are dangerous to both people and animals. What makes these pests dangerous is the many diseases they carry and spread. A few sicknesses you might contract from a flea are the bubonic plague, murine typhus, tularemia, and tungiasis. Fleas also regularly infect animals with disease-causing organisms such as tapeworms, Bartonella, and rickettsia.

Strategies To Prevent Fleas

Because fleas are regularly carried indoors by pests like rodents, birds, and bats, your focus should be on keeping these creatures off your property and out of your home. To do this, here are some great prevention tips to use.

  • Keep your yard free of clutter and debris by picking up toys, sticks, leaves, etc.
  • Cut back branches and bushes five feet from your home’s exterior.
  • Store wood, building materials, and landscaping items at least 30 feet from your home’s exterior.
  • Thoroughly inspect your home’s exterior foundation. Seal off gaps and cracks using a caulking gun or some liquid cement.
  • Repair damage to your home’s chimney, roofline, and siding.
  • Make sure your chimney has a rodent and bird-proof cap.
  • Fix damage to window/door screens and keep unscreened windows and doors closed when they are not in use.
  • Thoroughly clean your home and do your best to keep clutter to a minimum.
  • Store pet food, leftovers, and pantry items inside airtight plastic, glass, or metal containers.
  • Make sure your indoor and outdoor trash cans have tight-fitting lids.

How To Protect Your Pets Against Fleas

If you have outdoor pets and they do not have protection against pests like fleas and ticks, consider making that investment today. Most people choose to purchase flea and tick collars from local pet stores. If this option doesn’t seem right for you, get in touch with your veterinarian. They will present you with some other options and help find one that best fits you and your pet’s needs.
