When it comes to pest control, most people worry about the dangers of pests. While you likely know that some species like cockroaches are potentially dangerous, other species, like the stink bug, aren’t as familiar. Overall, stink bugs are mostly nuisance pests as they don’t spread illnesses to people or pets and don’t sting or bite.
However, just because they aren’t harmful doesn’t mean they are good to have around. They are known as quite invasive, and their numbers can quickly grow and be difficult to control. And, since they let off such a gross smell, having a bunch of stink bugs in your home is definitely not something you want.
Keep in mind that stink bugs are also agricultural pests. They can damage crops as well as other kinds of plants.
You can identify stink bugs by their shield-shaped bodies and their mottled brown, black, and tan coloration. They also have alternating dark and light markings around the edges of their backs. But while knowing how to identify stink bugs is useful, the truth is that these pests are sometimes confused for other species.
Some common look-alikes are the kissing bug and the western conifer seed bug. Kissing bugs do bite and can be dangerous, but you can tell them apart because while they have a similar shape and color to the brown marmorated stink bug, kissing bugs have yellow or red markings on their bodies.
The western conifer seed bug is another nuisance pest that can smell and stink, so there are a lot of similarities. However, western conifer seed bugs have large legs that look like leaves and have orange-yellow patches on their backs.
Stink bugs usually come indoors when the weather gets colder. Even in Reno, where the climate is more temperate, stink bugs can still get inside during the winter while searching for shelter. Once inside, they will live inside walls or under flooring, and you might not see them until they start to emerge in the spring.
The best thing for stink bug control is to try and prevent them from overwintering, but if you have stink bugs already, the experts at Natura Pest Control can help.
While brown marmorated stink bugs aren’t dangerous, trying to remove them on your own can be difficult and disgusting.
