What Termite Season Means For Reno Property Owners

April 30, 2021

Types Of Termites

The United States is home to subterranean, dry wood, and damp wood species of termites. The majority of termites that are problematic in Reno are subterranean, meaning they nest in the soil underground.  Termites create mud tubes that are less than an inch in width that they use for traveling between their nesting site and sources of wood.

What Are Termite Swarms

Swarmers are winged termites that are responsible for reproduction and establishing new colonies. During the spring months, swarmers will leave the nest location and find mating partners. A termite swarm is commonly seen following a period of rainfall. Property owners may see accumulations of discarded wings, which these insects shed.

Distinguishing Swarms Of Termites From Flying Ants

In Oklahoma, both termites and flying ants will swarm during the spring months with some types of ants continuing into the summer. The first way to differentiate them is to look at the two pairs of wings that each has.

The wings of the termite are all the same length, while the front wings of the ant are larger than those in the rear. They also have different antennae. The termite has antennae that point directly ahead of them and are straight. The antennae of the ant are bent and they point outward to the sides of the insect.

Signs Of Possible Infestation

Termites eat away at wood from the interior; however, the mud tubes or tunnels may be visible from the exterior. Common indicators include hollow sounding walls, squeaky floorboards, difficulty in opening or closing windows or doors with a wooden frame.

Tips For Preventing Termites

  • Remove piles of firewood, tree stumps, or other unnecessary wood from the exterior of the property.
  • Ensure that gutters and downspouts are keeping water from accumulating near the foundation of the property.
  • Prevent wooden parts of the structure from directly contacting the soil; consider creating a barrier of stone or similar material.
  • Closely inspect the foundation of the home for holes or other points of entry and fill them using a weatherproof caulk or sealant.
  • Limit the accumulation of moisture in basements and crawlspaces with good ventilation and a dehumidifier if necessary.

Taking Responsive Action Against Termites

Property owners must take decisive action when they suspect that termites have infiltrated their home. These pests can create significant damage to your investment and these problems can worsen rapidly.

Do not be tempted to consider the many supposedly effective products that you see marketed at home-improvement stores and other retailers. These options include sprays, foams, powders, and others that typically are not powerful enough to fully eradicate full colonies and may be a health risk. Promptly contact a local pest control professional that will thoroughly eliminate the problem.
